Failed Attack on Australia
For any that don't know, Australian authorites recently arrested 17 people linked to planning a major terrorist attack in Australia. Crazy stuff.
Mostly I'm curious on the opinions and information our Australian pals, Team and Nish, might have.
From what I know, they arrested 17 people, found chemicals and materials for making explosives, and the Australian government is pushing new Anti-Terror laws.
Does anyone have any more info on what exactly went to down?
I find it ironic that recently the US has been losing some support from other countries for our Anti-Terror war. But if Al Qaeda and other groups keep hitting other countries, and pulling stuff like this, they are just bringing the hammer down on themselves. I can understand how other countries would not really want to get really involved and such, but when something like this hits home, then its kind of an eye opener to say the least. It's just crazy how the terrorists are basically making more enemies for themselves.
And then there are the people the type of people that blame the US. Like, its our fault its happening, because their country is allied with us. But just look at Spain, they bailed out of the war for exactly that reason, they didnt want trouble, so they wanted out. Then a little while later the bombings in Madrid happened, which has been one of the worst recent terror attacks.
It's not just about the US, its not just us they are against. They are pretty much against anyone who isnt them, Muslim. They are extremists, they hate us and our way of life, and they feel its there duty to god to change us or kill us. Well all I have to say, is a big FUCK YOU to all of them.

hahaha Disco, can you ever be serious? All I'm trying to say, is they are pissed we are "invading" them. They see us as "Imperialistic", and think we just want to come in and pilage everything, and change them. Alot of there area of the world is war torn and fucked up enough, but yet instead of just poking one hornets nest, they are running around poking everyone they can find. They are making the situation worse for themselves.

The Federal Government has been pushing new Anti-Terror laws, but the individual State and Territory governments are not agreeing with the proposed legislation and will not incorporate the bill into state legislation.
At 2:30AM this morning The Victorian, New South Wales and Federal Police, ASIO (Australian Security Intelligence Organization) and the NSW Crimes Commission arrested 17 people suspected of terrorist activities. The 9 people arrested in Melbourne and 8 in Sydney will face trial amazingly today, police will oppose bail believing these arrests have foiled a potentially major terrorist attack which would take place somewhere in Australia, most likely in Melbourne. The arrests are the culmination of a 16 month combined operation between government agencies. The individuals are believed to have been working together. Chemical components believed to be used in making bombs were recovered from a property in Sydney's West.
This comes in light of much speculation of potential terrorist attacks in the cities of Sydney and Melbourne in the past week, the Australian Federal Police stating there was insufficient evidence to support the claim. There has been many conflicting reports about the subject, with the Police Chief Commisioner of Victoria believing an attack is imminant.
Australia is not new to terrorism, having endured 2 attacks in Bali which targeted westerners, and having lost citizens in the 9/11 attacks and in the recent London bombings.
I never supported the Iraq war and hate that our Prime Minister has committied our country to it. Obviously it is important to overcome terrorism, but that really can't be done. Tougher terror laws which allow our Police to 'shoot to kill' won't stop anyone if the Intelligence isn't good enough, and new laws won't do much to assist that without significant breaches to civil liberties and a massive cost to the taxpayer.
And as for Glaeqon's views that:

It is important to always define who 'they' are. Iraqi's? Afghans? Muslims? You did mention Muslims there, but we should think of the people who commit these crimes as criminals who are Muslim, not Muslims who are criminals. This is because they appear to kill irrespective of race, despite your claims. Do you think they made sure everyone in the World Trade centre or the Sari Club or on the London trains and busses were Christian first? No.
And people who are committing these separate terrorist acts only wish to remind the western world not to interfere with the business of other nations. This is an important point, but these crimes are obviously not the way in which to reinforce it.
Personally I am not worried about terrorist attacks. If it happens, it happens and I'm not going to hide in my house untill something does happen.
I just read that a Man who was suspected of terrorist activity was shot and injured earlier today. You can read the story here.

I pointed out that they were EXTREMIST muslims. I was not trying to say that all muslims or all arabs are terrorists, or anything. I have muslim friends, and I think its bullshit what they have to put up with in this country after 9/11. And I know they kill irrespective of race or religion. That is waht i was talking about. Its not like they are against or rather focusing on one type of people. So they are making enemies all over pretty much. As you said, its a horrible way to get there message across. I agree with you about alot of these anti-terror laws. I am pretty much completely against the US's "patriot act". Its horshit. Law enforcement can pretty much enter your home without a warrant, and hold you indefinetly if they want to, without a trial. I think its hilarious how they call it the "Patriot Act" when it basically takes away the civil liberties and rights that pretty much made this country.

Yeah David Hicks, an Australian has been a prisoner of the US in Guantanamo Bay since November 2001 without trial. He will face a military tribunal because President Bush decided that none of the provisions of the Geneva convention "apply to our conflict with al-Qaeda in Afghanistan or elsewhere throughout the world". And if found guilty, the US government announcedthet it wouldn't count the time he has been detained against his sentence, as would be the humane and normal legal practice.

All our governments. And it's not like one day they're going to turn around and say "Okay guys the threats over, everything's normal again",
There's no end in sight and it will just keep escalating.

Okay, Aussies seem to be an easy target, but little do most of us know that they are very active internationaly, and should be respected for their UN aid and foreign policy. And really when was the last time australia was implicated in horrible international conspiracy crap. Australia rules.

Well as I mentioned before our intelligence agencies are working very hard to curtail an attack on Australian soil, but I assume you are aware of the Bali bombings of 2002 and 2005 which killed 202 and 23 respectively. Bali is a very popular tourist destination for Australians who were believed to be the targets of the bombs.
And Sydney, where I live, has been named as a possible target for attacks. The Opera house seems an unlikely target to me as there aren't usually large numbers of people there, although I do believe it is a possible target. In a city of 4 million, the possibility of a terrorist attack is real.
Yeah and our foreign relief aid should be commended. Our government pledged 1 billion dollars to the recent Asia Tsunami and a further 1 billion was donated by citizens. Our foreign policy needs a lot of work, not too proud of that just yet...

Yeah, or maybe they were going for some of the 20,090,437 people who live here.
